I am an assistant professor at the University of Portland in Portland, OR. My lab seeks to understand how non-pathogenic gut microbes affect behavior and physiology in the nematode C. elegans. If you are interested in our work, please check out the resources under "Matty Lab".

I earned my PhD in Genetics and Genomics from Duke University in the Tobin Lab, where I investigated the host immune response to mycobacterial infection using zebrafish as a model system. I did my postdoctoral training at the Salk Institute in the Chalasani Lab, where my research & activities were funded by the National Science Foundation's Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Biology (PRFB).
I am committed to research mentorship, education, and equity in science. I use these passions to develop curricula and research opportunities for undergraduates within and beyond the University of Portland.
